I have an AC86U that has been running perfectly fine for 2 years now. I have an 8 port switch upstairs (Netgear GS108) directly connected to the router, with a few devices attached.
I also have a pair of MOCA adapters, leading to downstairs, with another 8 port switch (TP Link TL-SG108) connected to my home entertainment stuff.

All of a sudden, the switches are starting to disconnect from the router. This started about 3 days ago. No major changes, except for adding a Mac Mini about 2 weeks ago, and changing my printer’s ethernet cable out for a longer (15’) one.

if I reboot the switch it might work for a few moments, but within a minute it disconnects again. Again, this has worked perfectly for 2 years, and 2 years before that with an AC68U.

anyone have any thoughts? Or has my router just given up the ghost? I was holding off on upgrading to an AX86U until prices got back under control again, so if I don't have to upgrade, I'd rather not.

Have you tried powering down the entire network?

Try systematically disconnecting devices from the switches in an attempt to localise the problem. It's possible that you have a faulty cable or device. Also verify that you haven't created any network loops.

I tried disconnecting everything except the switch and one device (either the mac mini or the desktop PC), using a known good cable. It still disconnected.

What do you see in the router's syslog? I'd expect there to be errors of some sort showing up.

Excellent question! I didn't even think to look. Right now it only goes back a few hours, so I'm hooking everything up to get a log output for you guys.

Just to clarify; is this effecting both switches or just one? What about Ethernet devices connected directly to the router's LAN ports, are they also being disconnected?

This is what I get from the log: Nothing special that I can see. The Mac Mini gets the IP address I assigned to it. But when I log into the Mac, it has no connection.

Neither switch has a connection. I actually swapped the switches to see if only one of them was cutting out, but it's both.

Anything directly connected to the router's LAN ports work 100% fine, including the port used for the switch.

I suggest you turn off the logging of dropped packets as it serves no purpose and just fills up the log file with useless information.

Can you confirm that the mac-mini (or any other device) only has one network connection enabled, i.e it is not connected by WiFi and Ethernet at the same time.

Colin, pardon my ignorance, but could you point me in the right direction to disable logging the dropped packets?

Also, the Mac's wifi is, and has been, off. Everything else that's wired has the wifi disabled as well.

Firewall > General > Logged packets type = None.

What firmware version does your router have?

You said you have "a pair of MOCA adapters, leading to downstairs". So is that one MOCA adapter plugged into a router LAN port and another MOCA adapter plugged into the switch downstairs?
