Synology DS 109 vs New Buffalo Linkstation Pro LS-VL

New Around Here
HI. 1st time poster. Great site!

About to pull the trigger on my 1st NAS. Going to use it for file storage, backups (MacBook and PC), Itunes server (or storage for the music, havent decided the setup yet) and hopefully with my Apple TV. Also want to be able to backup the NAS to a USB drive.

So narrowed it down to Synology DS 109 and the new Buffalo LSTN Pro LS-VL.

To be honest hadn't considered the Buffalo, but it's about 100 bucks cheaper when you factor in the HD thats included and it's faster.

So looking for opinions. Anyone played with the new Buffalo? vs Synology? Pros vs Cons for support and GUI's?

Thanks for your help!

The Buffalo is indeed faster on the File Copy Read test by 0.6MB/s, but is slower on the File Copy Write test by 0.4MB/s, but either way both have very similar results as not to make a great deal of difference

As the Buffalo has a 1.6Ghz CPU (109 has a 1.2Ghz CPU), I would have expected it to be significantly faster, but this does not appear to be the case

In another thread, there is the suggestion that Synology are going to release the DS111 with a 1.6Ghz CPU, so I would expect a jump in speeds

The difference in cost however is significant, with the Buffalo as you mentioned being cheaper, and with a HD included

I've used Synology units for quite a few years and have found them to have excellent support and reliability, but that difference in price may very well be hard to resist
