...i just finished testing my new Synology DS209+

After reading review on SmallNetBuilde i expected transfers around 40MB/s. But my results was quite different. Especialy while reading from NAS.

Configuration:

  • NAS DS209+, FW 2.0 728, 2x 1TB HDD WD10EACS, no RAID setup
  • router Linksys WRVS4400N, 4port, gbps
  • switch Linksys SRW2008, 8port, gbps
  • workstation Core 2 Duo E8200 2,66GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 4GB DDR2 1066MHz, Marvel 88E5060 PCI-E on board NIC, 1x150GB WD Raptor - WD1500ADFD, Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium SP1

Results - continuous read - 4.37GB file:

jumbo frames - 4k
file size - 4 693 281 195 bytes

Altap Salamander 2.51 (file manager) - avg. 31MB/s
Vista OS file copy - avg. 70MB/s
FTP using Flash FXP 3.6.0 (SSL) - avg. 12,5MB/s
FTP using Flash FXP 3.6.0 (without SSL) - avg. 64MB/s

Results - continuous write - 4.37GB file:

jumbo frames - 4k
file size - 4 693 281 195 bytes

Altap Salamander 2.51 (file manager) - avg. 28MB/s
Vista OS file copy - avg. 42MB/s
FTP using Flash FXP 3.6.0 (SSL) - avg. 8MB/s
FTP using Flash FXP 3.6.0 (without SSL) - avg. 39MB/s

Vista SP1 has file copy optimizations that can significantly improve performance with some NASes, as you have found.
 
Yes, the current NAS test process is described here.

Thanks for the Russinovich link. Others have previously referenced it and it's a very good article for understanding how filecopy works in Vista SP1.
