Synology RT2600ac or Asus AC-5300?

I currently have an AC68u running Merlin, which is pretty good. But the wireless performance on it struggles in my house in some rooms, and the processor is nowhere near fast enough for me to get the full 100mb via the VPN that I get when using the vpn outside the router, I get 25mb at best with the 256bit encryption that I use.

So I am considering the AC-5300 and the Synology RT2600ac as possible replacements (I was looking at the WRT3200ACM due to its 1.8ghz processor but am less sure about that one).

I would use dd-wrt or Merlin firmware with the AC-5300.

I am trying to assess which is better. I know Synology are the benchmark standard for NAS and have great software and it sounds like this has translated well to their router as well. I could do with a NAS and the synology sounds like I could just plug a drive into it and have myself a basic NAS as well, instead of paying another £250 for a separate NAS.

Has anyone tested both or either of these over a high end VPN (capable of over 100mb when used on a pc) and a connection of over 100mb? I have googled a few results which seem to suggest the synology is very poor when it comes to vpn speeds but that Synology had indicated it was a known issue....over 6 months ago, and still it seems nothing has changed (at least according to the thread on synology's own forum). I have managed to find one VPN test done by Long from another thread which suggests the RT2600 is capable of about 60mbit, but a few posts later another user again saying they can't get more than about 28, which matches what other users were saying on the synology forum. https://www.snbforums.com/threads/t...tp-link-archer-c5400.37609/page-2#post-328175

Also does the Synology have split-routing for VPN, so that like my Merlin powered AC68u, I can simply select which internal IP's I want to go via the VPN, while everything else will bypass it? I believe it does but don't know for sure.

Anything else I should consider between these (or even the WRT3200ACM)?

I am leaning towards the Synology at the moment but it seems at best I will get 60mbit over vpn. It's a shame, a new model with a better processor allowing 100mbit+ vpn would have been perfect. Maybe they have another new one in the works for next year.
