Trying to combine two switches is driving me insane...loopback?

I love Netgear's unmanaged switches: used them for years, never had a problem (although I haven't owned a PoE-capable one). But I gather that their managed switches have an annoying requirement to set up a Netgear cloud account and enable remote management, so I've not bought any of those. Unless you really want VLAN support, I'd stick to the unmanaged ones.

Pro-Safe Netgear switches do local management... no need for any kind of cloud account.

Okay, bought these unmanaged routers:

Netgear 16 POE GS316PP
Netgear GS234

Connected each router via their last Port (16 on the POE, 24 on the non-POE, though I don't think it matters?) directly to the Asus ports.

Turned off my router, unplugged the old switches. Inserted the new ones. Turned on my router. Turned on my switches.

Cameras work. Wonderful.

Internet still choppy/intermittently losing connections.

I do note that my Asus Merlin software has Spanning Tree Protocol enabled by default, which i assume is fine since it helps prevent loop backs.

Any other ideas?

So I removed the POE switch, left the main switch. Still have connectivity issues. Lagging/disconnects across devices.

If I plug a laptop directly into the port on the router next to the port I’m using for the switch. I get amazing internet speeds on the laptop without issue.

Makese wonder if there is an issue with a setting somewhere on the ASUS router that causes an issue with switches??

You have an Arris TG3482G device (what you call Xfinity XB6) and it's a residential Gateway - cable modem with router and Wi-Fi. Why don't you run it as Router for some time (disable Wi-Fi on it if you want) and see how the switches behave? The one thing you never touched on your network with issues is your Asus router and we know nothing about its configuration or condition.

This one has a couple of issues...

One - if disabled, WiFi still broadcasts on a hidden SSID
Two - it's an Intel Puma series chipset

Not worth dealing with - consider an upgrade to something like an Arris Surfboard S33

Was definitely something in the Asus router itself. Last minute (had people coming over) I decided to pull a second Asus router I was using in my backyard as an AP (not being used in winter) and restored it to default. Then went through the painful process of retyping my 30 or so DHCP reservations, pulled out the RT-AX86U and everything finally worked.

Now just going to reset the Asus, and ideally figure out how to use the NVRAM save/restore utility as it drives me crazy retyping shirt in. Surprised whether it's Merlin or Asus or any other router software provider hasn't made some sort of easy to use import from csv sort of functionality!

This "issue" is unrelated to the OP issue. Arris TG3482G is good enough gateway for the specific testing purposes. You have read only parts of the conversation and came up with unrelated device replacement suggestion. I also have an Intel Puma-6 ISP provided modem on the same Rogers Cable network and it works well. Here in Canada Arris Surfboard S33 is not on the list of ISP certified devices, not an option.

No, I was cleaning up on other parts of the thread - go back up and read it thru...

With Puma 6 - issues with the Intel based modem chipset are well known, including class action lawsuits...

You'll be better off with something other that a Puma based modem - that much is known...
