Turning off HDD

Maarten

New Around Here
Hello forum,

I've attached a wd 10eavs hdd to a rt-ac66u.
Is it possible to turn it off when i am not using it?
It keeps on spinning even when I am not using it.
I use Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.372_1300

thanks in advance.

Not possible with the stock firmware, unless your HDD's own internal power management can do that for you.

Do you know if there is a good reason they left out that option?

I don't like the idea of manually turning the hdd off and on.
Do you know of other firmwares I could use that have the option I want?

Mine does, provided your USB disk firmware properly supports it - not all do.

Hi,
Because all HDD is different, it'll not be easy to expect router f/w to deal with this issue. Check with HDD manufacturer support. Some times there is f/w update for the drive.
In my case I use NAS drives which go to sleep when not in use. Better look into thiss when you purchase drives.

I installed the latest firmware build by merlin (thanks!)

I set the Disk spindown idle time (in seconds) to 600.

Is this the setting that could prevent non-stop spinning?

When is the disk considered idle?
Is there an overview of the disk activity?

Make sure you don't use Download Master, as it will generate regular disk activity.

There's no way to monitor actual disk activity.

Also note that disk spin down doesn't work with all USB enclosures and disks, so results may vary.

It works!
I've disabled download manager and share.
Now with only DLNA still on it spins down after a while.
hurray!
thanks for the info and the great firmware modification!

Re:

If you download torrents you can install Transmission and there you can control torrent upload which reflects to HDD auto spining down. I mean when donwload your torrent and after that uploaded x 3 (times) it's stops automaticly and your hdd spindown after that.
