UK Three 3G USB dongle with Asus RT-N66U - any suggestions?

New Around Here
Hi all

Just a quick question really....

Wondering if anyone has any experience with using a 3G USB Dongle with a N66U [currently running Merlin 378.55 but could switch to different version if needed] in the UK with Three as the provider?

Three's current offerings dont seem to be in the USB Adapter list [in the USB modem section within the UI of the router].

On Three's store, it's only showing a ZTE MF730M [dont have 4G in this area atm] though possibly they might have more options instead of this dongle if I call them.

Just wondering what my options are as im moving house at the end of the week and it doesnt look like my line will get sorted in time [knowing BT, it'll probably take a month or so].

Was thinking of getting a Mifi with SIM deal from Three [Huawei E5330 Mobile - 5GB - monthly contract] so i can fallback to that if i cant manage to find/get a USB 3G dongle to work / whilst i research some more...

Anyone have any suggestions with this?

Thanks.

Back when I was on PPoE ADSL (2 years ago) I used a Huawei E220 (Vodaphone badged unlocked) and also eventually trialled Infinity IW-021 and ZTE MF823 for Dual WAN failover.
They did work although they were all very low 3G speeds due to the poor phone coverage/signal on Three/Orange/Vodaphone...even with the purchase of an external 3G/4G antenna for the ZTE USB modem.

As I was working @home more and more, a connection was more important than raw internet speed as ADSL to the village was unreliable in bad weather etc.

Converted to Fibre two years ago, and have lost the Fibre connection probably only twice in that time, and the EE phone coverage has improved so I now use a PAYG Mifi Huawei E5776 (which gives me 4G almost as fast as my 20Mbps Fibre!) as a backup for my work VPN access.

So whilst I may have lost the convenience of the automatic Dual WAN failover, manually starting the MiFi gets me back on air for work within 5 mins as soon as I power off the router if the Fibre goes down.

P.S. I think 4G USB Modem support on the Asus routers is still sketchy?

Huawei e398 is working on my AC87U. Also Huawei e3372 with Hilink in Tethering Mode.

Thx both for the responses.

I think as i've only a few days left until i move house, i'll just have to get this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KR51QCO/?tag=smallncom-21

[at least that way its unlocked and is pretty much the same price as what i'd get it for from Three]

as no 4G and its the sorta cheapest option [would have gone for the newer model if i had the cash].

Can then get me a sim monthly contract from Three and if that EE sim does turn up, i can try it out and if it works, cancel the Three sim and have a ton of data for a tenner :)

may grab a USB 3G dongle in the process. Will aim to feedback to here anything that works so that others can benefit from the info :)

Cheers.
