Apologises for hijacking this old thread but thought to share my experience of the repeated incorrect username or password nag screen that repeatedly came up every time I tried to log onto the router GUI and my solution!

Long story short, needed to factory reset my router and decided then to change the login password and the setup process went smooth sailing. However, shortly after I started getting the constant "incorrect username or password 5 times..." and could not fathom what was causing it. Found this thread and followed Yota instructions above and was rested assured that the WAN wasn't enabled etc. and checked out the log file.

Within the log, I noticed that an HTTPd message that kept pointing to an IP address which is associated with Home Assistant virtual machine and then realised that within Home Assistant I had an ASUS integration where it is suspected that this was continuously trying to log into the Asus router using the old password. My hunch was right, having updated the password on the ASUS integration in Home Assistant made the "incorrect username or password...." go away!
