Unable to reach IPs on my network over wireless

Michael Skvarenina

New Around Here
I have an ASUS RT-AC88U.

On my network is a Denon receiver with an IP address (192.168.1.107) and I sometimes run the Denon app on my iPhone to control the receiver.

From time to time though the app will reporting that it cannot reach the device. I actually have 2 apps that can talk to the Denon and when the connectivity stops, neither app can reach the receiver.

At the same time however, my MacBook, also on the wireless network can ping the IP address which tells me that the Denon is on the network and since I'm going from the Mac (which is wireless) to the Denon, the router is handing off the ping requests.

So I'm wondering what the router may be doing to block access to the Denon. What I can say is that I run both a 2.4 and 5GHz network and tonight my iPhone was connected to the 2.4. It worked the Denon at first then later couldn't reach it. I then switched to the 5GHz network and I could reach the Denon once again.

Any ideas on why this would work intermittently?

Well, that's likely part of the problem...

Asus is known not to be very Apple protocol friendly... even though mDNS (e.g. Bonjour) is standards based...

One can always do from a linux box...

avahi-browse -at

But avahi might not be there... because Asus doesn't care...

My router does show up when I run this command.

Well that's not good to hear.

This morning another device on my network (192.168.1.12, my Homeseer server) was not pingable from both my iPhone and MacBook, both of which are wireless.

My desktop however is hardwired to the network and I was able to ping the Homeseer.

I waited about 10-15 minutes then tried again and everything was working again.

Double check and ensure that IGMP-Proxy is disabled, as this can cause some issues with Bonjour/Avahi/mDNS getting lost and confused...

IGMP-Snooping - this is a good thing, as it's built into the switch section of the CPU on the router - even Apple supports this on their broadcom based devices, and it generally works pretty well.

Worst case with Bonjour is power everything down - and bring it back up, and this should allow the group to reassemble itself...

I changed the IGMP_Snooping but this didn't seem to address the issue as I'm still unable to reach some hardware on the network at least from my MacBook.

As an example yesterday night I was not able to open a device's homepage from the MacBook. I opened up the Terminal program and tried to PING the IP address it was not not reachable. Then I went to a hardwired desktop and was able to launch the app (and ping the device).

A little while later with me doing nothing at all, the MacBook was able to connect.

I do have a Windows laptop and the next time this happens I'll see if I can ping/reach the app from there to see if it's just an Apple item of if perhaps it's related to the wireless in general.

Above someone said "Asus is known not to be very Apple protocol friendly". What would be the best router for a home environment if ASUS are problematic?

So same thing happened again tonight. Could not reach the Denon, noticed my iPhone as on the 2.4 network. Switched it to the 5.8 and I was able to connect.

What could this be?
