My experience from a few years ago was that laptop manufactures restrict what internal wireless cards can be installed in a laptop. Apparently the BIOS checks the devices hardware IDs against a list of allowed adapters at boot-up.

What laptops have folks installed Intel 5300 on successfully? Was a bios hack involved?

Tim, did you install the 5300 in your Fujitsu P7120 Lifebook?

No. It takes a mini-PCI card.

I have installed an Intel 5300 AGN in a Dell Mini 12 and just put an
Intel 5100 AGN in a Sony Vaio VGN-NR110E. Both took full-height
mini-PCIe cards.

I used the drivers downloadable from Intel in both machines. XP in
the Dell, Vista in the Sony.
