USB flash drives, all HDDs do not work.. what am I missing

New Around Here
Hi all,

I have connected 7 different USB flash drive sticks from 4GB to 32GB in size. I've also connected 2 different 2TB USB external drives via USB, as well as 4 different 1TB to 3TB drives via a USB dock. Every single one of them result in the USB green light lighting up in the admin page, but ALL of them say unmounted. I've just updated to the latest firmware as well, and it still does this with every drive I try. I've tried both USB ports, sometimes two at a time. I've formatted drives with NFTS 4K clusters, 512byte clusters, exfat, and fat32 on the flash drives. Nothing seems to work. I am beyond frustrated after spending hours at this and am at a loss as to why so many people post that things just work for them. What am I missing? How do 10+ different drives/usb sticks all not work at all? Is there something I must do to get them to mount?

Thank you.

Check the System Log on the router webui - it might give you hints as to what is going on.

Note that exFat is not supported - only ext2, ext3, fat32 and NTFS.

Make sure that when you unplug the disk from the PC you use the "Safely Remove" option. Otherwise if you plug it to the router with a dirty filesystem, it might refuse to mount it.

Thank you for the reply. I use an esata dock to format/copy files to the HD. I've tried FAT32 and NTFS on the same drives, as well as several USB sticks. I've ejected the USB drives as said, and still they always show up saying unmounted. The log shows it being added, but does not say anything was wrong, nor is there any log about a dirty file system. The USB light comes on, but nothing works. I haven't tried ext3 yet, but if it's supposed to work with fat32 and ntfs, I am at a loss as to why 5 HDDs and 7 USB sticks ALL do not work. I've spent hours formatting the HDs in fat32 and ntfs, with ntfs using default as well as different sized clusters. Nothing seems to matter.

take it to the store and ask for a unit change. probably much faster since it is still new. assuming you buy it at your local store
