Using Mullvad Wireguard VPN with custom DNS

Hello,

I am currently using Mullvad Wireguard VPN on my GT-AX6000 using Asuswrt-Merlin version 3006.102.4.

I am able to use VPN Director and set clients that should be using the VPN. However, even if I set the DNS server in the Wireguard settings, it is using Mullvad's DNS servers. I want to use NextDNS with Mullvad as my VPN. How can I do that? I know we can wuse custom DNS ith their application, but I can't get it to work when the VPN is set on a router. It looks like Mullvad may be doing some DNS hijacking.

Is there a way around it?

I've struggled with this myself quite a bit. I use Windscribe and I removed its DNS details from the VPN client settings, and it seems to have made a difference—but I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct approach:

It looks like Mullvad may be doing some DNS hijacking.

Is there a way around it?

You could alternatively use Unbound and run your own local DNS server. Then you would set that DNS value to the Router's LAN IP. That seems to work for me.

Erasing everything in the DNS Server field did the trick
