WAN ip Renews without warning

For the past 2 months or so we have been experiencing some odd behaviour with our internet connection. We will suddenly lose our internet but only for 1 minute or less. When the connection is restored, we have a brand new IP. I am assuming this problem lies with my ISP but I would like to get others opinion under what circumstances could this IP be renewed so quickly???

My main router is AC68U running Merlins FW 378.56_2

the isp is running a very short dhcp lease time and thus when you reconnect you get a different ip address , does it happen around the same time every day ? could be an over sold subscription base by a cheap isp

Ah... But here's the thing. I have at times shutoff my router for what ever reason and after 5+minutes rebooted but still retained my original IP. There is no specific times when this occurs but everyone/thing connected is blown off the network for a short period of time. The new IP is obvious because netflix no longer works until I reset my account/IP information at Unblock-US

If you have a matching "Ethernet link down" then it means that your modem just rebooted itself. Look for a problem with either the modem or the ISP.

So, I have been watching my router for a few weeks now and when the problem occurs my log shows only "Ethernet link up". Each time this happens there is no matching "Ethernet link down" log entry. Am I to assume now that the problem lies with the router not the modem as I originally thought??

link up messages would also indicate an Ethernet-related issue, which usually points at the modem.
