If you have a very big house, a single router won't do it. Set APs in your house

I had an R8000, it could cover my 2605 Sqft home (Basement, Ground and an Upper Floor) pretty well in both 2.4/5Ghz bands. I had it placed on the top floor and I had ok signal even in the basement, at least good enough to stream Netflix in HD without issues. Then again I suppose building materials and the fact that some homes have a metal meshwork in the walls can have a significant impact on the range though.

Always depends on the infrastructure. I can run both X6 R8000 and X8 R8500 fine in a 2 storey 1950's UK home with thick walls and ceilings.

The X8 active antennas can certainly help by amplifying WiFi signals in the antenna. See

I hate these video they are always so exaggerated and always promise more than what is in the real unit. The speed is so fast that you need a seat belt so you do not fly out of the chair and the coverage is as big as the whole neighborhood gets the benefit of it.

How big? 10,000 sq ft? What style, multi story or single?

Another option is a new product package that Netgear is offering through Best Buy which includes an R7000 with built in Powerline and a Powerline Access Point (which they call DST Dead Spot Terminator). In my experience if you have a large home you will get best coverage by use of a router and AP's placed appropriately. The challenge with AP's is that they require a hard wire connection to your network. The Netgear Nighthawk DST router takes care of that with its use of Powerline. If PL works in your home this is an excellent solution.

This is a pretty cool solution. I'm using something like it from TP-Link, but it's only 2.4Ghz. Once these are out for a bit and Netgear offers a separate head-end (rather than having to have a certain router), I'll be checking these out.
