Why abandon ASUS router / extender for Orbi?

Why abandon AC68U as main router and N66U as an extender, its a good combination.
What is it you want out of the new system, that you can not get out of your present?

I have an outbuilding which is at edge of the AC68U range

Also with the AC68U at the lower level (house is built into a hill side) and edge of the house where the cable modem is positioned I need to place the N66 in the center of the top of the house to get good coverage in all locations. It works in the house (but marginal as I said in the outbuilding) but I don't get my full speed (150Mpbs down) anywhere apart from devices with a good 5Ghz (or wired) connection to the AC68. (Edit - I should add the N66 is reporting a good ~ 300 Mbps 5GHz connection to the AC68 - but real world is less and has to be shared between transmitting and receiving)

Looking at the router charts here it looks like Orbi has better long range connection than the AC68 (maybe giving better connection in the outhouse) and certainly giving better speeds throughout the house from the second Orbi

The Amplifi HD would allow a third extender in the outhouse - but from the mesh review here won't give the same speed as the Orbi throughout the house. I also think the wall socket mounted repeaters may be harder to position for good coverage in the upper part of the house vs current (high) location of the N66 (and where the Orbi would go)

I have an Amplifi HD on pre-order from Amazon and its due to ship tomorrow.

Trying to decide whether to stick with the Amplifi or cancel the order and get 2 Orbis...

i would think almost all wps these days is push button rather than pin based and on all the time

I bought a D-Link DAP-1520 a few weeks ago which worked pretty well in the outhouse. However even when I disable WPS on the DAP-1520 scanning using Acrylic WiFi Professional shows that PBC and Pin WPS is still enabled. Even though the latest version of the DAP-1520 firmware claims to support turning PIN WPS off - apparently it doesn't.....

hmmm , i think you might be looking in the wrong place for your solution

how far away is the outbuilding and whats it made of material wise

you would prob be far better of considering an external mounted client bridge mounted on top of the outbuilding and running ethernet down into the outbuilding and ether connecting to that or adding a wireless access point for the outbuilding

the reason im saying this is yes the orbi may give good connectivity but for the system to work the units can only be prob 15 meters apart and the sat can only connect back to the router , so yes the orbi may give you better wifi inside the main house but prob wont give you any advantage in the out building

The outbuilding is a garage (wood framing and wood shingles) about 100 ft (but down hill) from wall where AC68 is placed.

I would keep both Orbis where the current AC68 and N66 are for good coverage in the house. I am hoping better range of the Orbi (per Tim's testing in the router charts) would give better coverage in the garage. The AC68 connects reliably - but speed isn't great.

With the Amplifi HD I would put 3rd repeater in the garage. I can plug into socket at ceiling level so should have line of site for the main router. The DAP-1750 was plugged here and worked well with the AC68 but of course had the WPS security hole.
