New Around Here
Sorry if this is a rude or demanding question. I know the devs do this as a hobby.

WIll the new pro model be getting the merlin firmware? And if it does, how long will it take (based on previous model launches to merlin firmware release time?)? I don't mind waiting for a couple of weeks or months, but it's not a cheap router and I want to make sure that I will eventually get the merlin firmware. If not I will just get the older 86u non pro version that has merlin for sure.

I got 300 rmb (60$ canadian) off of the sale price if i pre-ordered the router; so thats why I bought it before I saw the merlin firmware being released. It should arrive in a couple of days. I have 7 days to return it unopened. But for a 300 rmb discount I figured I would take the risk and see what the devs here thought.

I am based in China and need Astrill vpn on my router.

Thank you for your time

Would of thought almost certainly, as it doesn't really differ that much from the non pro version.

Welcome to the forums @DBJ.

You're betting on the Pro firmware to be available within days and allow you to test too. None of that will give you any indication of how reliable it may be, even if the firmware is released by RMerlin (I'm almost 100% it won't, in the timeframe you indicate).

The GT-AX6000 is a much better buy for the long term and has been stable for me for months so far. Gamble as you see fit.

I haven’t seen any prices yet for this model.

What’s the list price of the Pro (without a discount)?

And for comparison: what does the regular AX86U cost there?
1299 for the regular 86U, 1699 for the pro version. and 2200 for the 6000. These are all in RMB

This is the response I was looking for. I'll grab the older 86U or the 6000. Why would you get the 6000 over the AX86U? Out of curiosity.

Thanks!

So roughly €50 extra for a Pro?
400 RMB difference. Not sure what that is in euros. Now I'm thinking about just getting an older 86U and waiting for the AXE86U to come out next year.... Instead of a AX6000

Good news, because it's national holiday I found a AX6000 for the same price as the AX86U PRO. Both were 1699 on sale. (or about 340 Canadian dollars). So I will return the 86u pro and just stick with the AX6000. As L&LD points out, it's already known to work, and it seems like it's just as good, if not better than the 86U PRO will be. So maybe this is a happy accident!

Just note ... the RT-AX6000 is the same as the RT-AX88U which has been around for several years ... not to be confused with the recently announced GT-AX6000 which I believe was adopted as RMerlin's main router back in April this year [having replaced his RT-AX88U which was his main router].

For reasons best known to Asus - model number confusion has reigned supreme for at least a decade ;).

EDIT: Specs comparisons here ...

I got the GT-AX6000 asus router for 340 canadian dollars. It was on sale as the same price as the 86u pro, so I scooped it up.

You nearly gave me a heart attack though as I dashed back to my taobao order to make sure I got the correct one. Why on earth would one be RT-AX6000 and the other GT-AX6000. It's just a bit cruel honestly.

Model number confusion isn't an Asus forte. Anything that is sold by a corporation offers the same level of clarity, for at least the last 80 to 100 years.
