will this Omada setup work

New Around Here
Hello everyone,

I would like to ask for advice that is relatively simple – will this Omada setup work?

I am especially interested if I am not missing anything with the ER706W router – can it really serve as connection point where other devices can connect via cable and also Wi-Fi? Will there not be any conflict with the rest of the system?

And if this setup will not work – what changes do I need to make?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Ivo

what are the goals, use case, for the network ?
What are the bandwidth needs for each user ? high usage paths for each ?
Have you used the Omada wifi map tools to estimate the number and placement of APs ?

Degrub, thanks.

It is a home network, relatively bigger house and garden. Around 30 clients, most of them stationary. Majority are smart plugs and other things that do not need a lot of data. In general I would say we do not send/receive a lot of data.

Did not use Omada app.
I currently have Asus aimesh setup, 4 routers, wired. It is very unreliable and Asus was not able to help. Therefor I am looking for something different. I worked on my current "AP" placement and I believe I found what works for me - which are these 4 APs in locations where they are so I want to put the new ones into same locations.

What I am mainly looking for is reliability - I do not want to reboot my network few times a week, I do not want to solve mysterious stuff, like some devices suddenly not able to connect to some APs, and many other things that bug me.

I would appreciate any feedback from you and please also focus on my original question which is - will the setup I created work?

Thanks!
Ivo

Suggest using the Omada AP mapping tool to confirm. The more accurate you can make it, wall construction, plot plan, etc. , the better the prediction. These are not generally "blast them out" APs typical of consumer gear. SMB gear is more APs, lower power to get better roaming and coverage.

i use CISCO gear, so cannot confirm "work". @Tech9 ?

There are plenty of posts by Tech9 with example setups using Omada.

Here's a suggestion - Factory reset your nodes and convert them to APs only since you like the coverage. Factory reset and manually configure the main router. Use the main router as is without any of the AiMesh nonsense. This is the same way a SMB setup would work anyway.

The above components will work together and will be recognized and managed by the OC200 controller. The ER706W router looks good, it's basically ER7206 with AX3000 radio. EAP650 access points also look good, matching AX3000. The switch is a popular model and has enough PoE budget for the devices connected to it. Not sure what is EAP225 AC1200 doing there. Is it an outdoor AP?

Asus stuck to crappy Broadcom support and development. This is where many of the issues come from. AiMesh patch software comes on top. You have to look really hard to find Broadcom based SMB hardware.

Degrub and Tech9, thank you both

@degrub I will give it a shot without the tool. The reason is all the wiring is done and there is no easy way to change it. If it wont work, I will try that tool. Thanks for suggestion, I was not aware of that.

@Tech9 really thanks, thats what I needed to know. The EAP225 is exactly like you say. It is an outdoor one. It is covered against rain, but still outside, exposed to moisture, heat, freeze. I currently have there normal Asus router and I was surprised about the shape of the device since its protected against rain and not exposed to direct sunlight, still looks bad after couple months.

Gentlemen, really grateful for your support. I will buy it over the weekend and hopefully next week I am away from that Asus nightmare.

There is EAP650-Outdoor model, by the way.

I would prefer ER7206 router, 3x EAP650 and 1x EAP650-Outdoor. Don't like mix and match.

Actually... ER7206 router, 3x EAP610 and 1x EAP610-Outdoor. Don't count on 160MHz channel bandwidth. EAP610s may come cheaper and the only difference is 160MHz channel support. It needs DFS range, not guaranteed to work, shorter range. Good luck!
