Will VPN still work when just used as an access point?

I've got VPN working in my home, using the AC66U in typical router fashion - it's connected to the cable modem, it has the external IP address, it's doing DHCP, etc.

I'm wondering if VPN would still work if I put this into a different environment where it would simply serve as a wifi access point? There is already a cable modem/router, network switches, a Windows server that handles DHCP/DNS, etc.

I know can I get the VPN packets to the ASUS using port forwarding in the cable modem, just not sure if the VPN functionality will still work since the ASUS isn't really the "gatekeeper" in this type of setup.

Would I need to actually put it into "access point" mode? Or just use it in normal router mode and disable DHCP?

Thanks for any advice.

VPN Functionality

What are you trying to do with your VPN establish a more secure connection to the Internet and perhaps a way to get around geo blocking? Or are you trying to establish a secure connection from the WAN to the assets and devices on your LAN?

In my case I have two APs set up behind my ASUS router. On my E3000 I run an OpenVPN connection through a server in Miami. As I fall back I can establish a PPTP VPN connection to NYC or LPTP VPN connection to London.

On a separate Linksys 54GL running DD-WRT I run a PPTP VPN connection to Stockholm.

Both the VPN routers are connected to a LAN port on the ASUS which runs to a WAN port on the VPN routers. Each of the VPN routers is setup as a DHCP server.

Normally I have three SSIDs available: Pick the one that provides the security or geographic location required for the application. In addition some devices are connected directly to the router providing the service required.

ASUS = Connection to local ISP no VPN. Fastest connection for when speed is more important than extra security.

E3000 = Connection to Miami (NYC & LONDON avail with a settings change). Miami is my nearest VPN server location to my actual geographic location.

54G = Connection to Stockholm. Slowest because of the distance and lack of processing power and memory in 54G. Fine for reading Swedish source material in Swedish.

This is just an example of what can be done with VPN if you just need the security going from your LAN to the WAN while running the VPN on an AP.

Someone else will need to tell you if it is possible to run the VPN from the WAN to your LAN if the VPN is running on an AP behind your router.

Thanks for the response. I'm just considering using one of these units in a business setting to provide remote access to internal resources from the WAN. There is already an old wireless G router in place setup as an AP. I was considering upgrading to the AC66U and wanted to know if we could take advantage of the VPN features as well, given the current configuration.
