Wired gigabit router with good QoS?

HI. I am using an ooma VOIP device. My PCs are all gigabit LAN connections (which I prefer to keep). My current router is not gigabit so I have added a switch. I will eventually add an NAS at gigabit speed. There are two printers on the network at 10/100.

It is my understanding that mixing 10/100 and gigabyte can cause the gigabyte links to downspeed for all uses. If someone could verify that it would help me.

I keep having problems with the ooma box. The manufacturer wants it between the router and modem. That configuration seriously screws up the speed available from the internet (DOCIS 3) modem. What I am looking for is a router That has all gigabyte interfaces, is IPV6 ready, and is real good about QoS. I have no need for wireless, but it seems difficult to find a current router that is only for wired use.

One router that stands out for performance is the Asus RT-N56U. However, it is not compatible with DDR-wrt and I see a lot of posts that indicate Asus firmware sucks; and this one is no exception.

Can anyone suggest a router that is priced for home use that fills the bill?

Not true. See When Flow Control is not a Good Thing .

For "real good" QoS, I always recommend routers based on Ubicom chipsets. They automatically ID and prioritize media-related traffic, primarily for uplink.

It's tough finding wired-only consumer routers because there is little demand. I'd look at either a D-Link DIR-655 or the newer DIR-657, whichever one you can get cheaper.

Both support IPv6, but I can't vouch for how well.

I am also looking for something along these lines. Ideally I want a router without a wireless AP built in. Just a wired gigabit router which is rock solid, with decent throughput and a gigabit switch inside.

I have had no end of trouble with bad wireless hardware in these consumer routers so I bought some Prosafe access points which I will be using instead of the built in stuff (they have been faultless so far).

Would you still say the D-Link 655? Pretty cheap on Amazon UK at the moment.

Cheers.

Opinion: you want best-of-class engineering/firmware, take a pass on D-Link and Netgear. I use Cradlepoint; ZyXel is another good one.

My VoIP experience of a 2 years: Tried four VoIP providers that use ATAs in the residence. All were unacceptable; no end of problems, missed calls, outages at their end, blame-game on me/them. I paid a bit more and have wireline quality/reliabilty with TimeWarner's digital phone. The modem for that phone is independent of my Internet access cable modem. More than VoIPo and the lot of them, but it just works, and is half the price I paid for far too many years to my only LEC choice: AT&T.
