Wireless question AC68U

Hello Smallnet Builder,

Still a newbie on the site and the asus routers.
For now i have a AC66U(inlaws) and a AC68U(private) to play with.
At my inlaws i have two different SSID´s, one for the 5Ghz freq and one for the 2.4Ghz range.
This works without a problem as i can manually select the 5Ghz connetion for my phone(LG G2) and Tablet(Nexus 7 ´13 edition).
At home i installed the AC68U, during initial setup it gives the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz the same SSID name.
I thought ok, lets try this as i make the assumption the router/phone will see they are both 5Ghz compatible and it will get the fast network when i start watching YT in HD, when im out of range for the 5Ghz freq it will automaticly change to the 2.4Ghz.
In reall life i dont experience this though, even when im standing next to the AC68U it will still show the 2.4Ghz speeds on my phone while looking at YT in HD quality or use popcorntime on the tablet.
Is my assumption wrong of how the Wi-Fi will work and do i have to make two different SSID´s for booth freq´s?
Both routers are running the 3.0.0.4.374.43_2-03j9527 fork from John9527 and booth are ¨cracked¨ to #a settings for more tansmit power, they still have the default CFE though as for now im no seeying the benefit of hanging them.

Yes it is best to have separate SSID's for each band and use 5Ghz when in range
