New Around Here
Just opened it and got the slow blinking power. Biggest problem is with the router connected via wired connection, I can't access the configuration menu. Spoke to ASUS who had me do the 30-30-30 thing but no luck. I saw a post about setting up a static IP but the firmware flash utility still can't find the router.

Do I have a brick ? Seems like there are a few posts out there about perhaps how to discover the router and reset it's address. Thought I'd ping the folks here before I sent it back or for warranty replacement.

Have you installed the Asus Utility CD ? There is a Device Discovery program
run itand see if the router is discovered and what ip-adress it has.

You are the third person to my knowledge who just received a brand new RT-AC66U that came with a corrupted firmware installed. Reflashing through the Firmware Recovery tool will solve your problem.

OK, tried the device discovery and said 0 devices found. That's troubling .... I have it setup for static IP. Should I reset that ? I wish I could connect it up via USB to recover the firmware.

Don't use the Device Discovery - use the Firmware Recovery tool. Device Discovery will expect a router in working condition.

Firmware Recovery can work even if the firmware on the router completely fails to boot. Trust me, that has happened a lot to me this past week. :)

No need for a USB connection. Power off the router, then power it on holding the reset button until the power LED slowly blinks (usually 5-8 seconds). Release the reset button and the power LED should continue to blink indicating the router is in recovery mode. Then use the Firmware Recovery tool to flash the firmware version of your choice. This will take several minutes so don't worry. When it is done the recovery tool will let you know. You can erase the NVRAM by powering down the router, holding the WPS button and powering the router back up. When the power LED blinks rapidly that will indicate that the NVRAM has been cleared.

I am sorry to hear that your router had corrupted firmware out of the box. Can you PM/email me your Serial Number so that I may check the shipment to see if there happened to be a bad batch of firmware? (the same goes for anybody else reading this)

If for some reason the Firmware Recovery doesn't work, please contact me so that I can help you get a replacement router.

Firmware Recovery worked ! I'm confused as to why ASUS support didn't suggest this. It saved me a long delay and shipping cost and probably ASUS some money. Works great now.

I also had the FW corrupted out of the box and the FW recovery got it working (actually I just went to 192.168.1.1 with my computer wired in and set to a static ip). I would share the serial number but I already returned mine to the reseller for a refund though because I was never sure if it was a bad FW load or another issue that caused the corruption.

Do you still have your original invoice? If so, it would probably be written on it.

Otherwise, send Jeremy some info as to where you purchased it. Might be enough for him to compare with the other people having the same issue, and figure out if it's indeed a bad batch coming from the same place (or the same supplier).

Thank You!!!

This site and this thread in particular completely saved me.

I just opened up my brand new RT-AC66U, I was absolutely thrilled and I hooked it up with the kind of excitement that a child has on Christmas morning!

Unfortunately, I turned it on and realized that it's functionality closely resembled that of a brick. :(

I hooked the 10 year old linksys router back up went to the ASUS site and after wasting sometime there I started Googeling. That brought me directly to this thread.

As, instructed above I Downloaded some new firmware from a link provided on this site, hooked the RT-AC66U back up and I put the router into recovery mode. I uploaded the new firmware and I was able to configure the router. Success!

I have been to this site many times to read reviews and opinions on networking equipment but I never bothered to register before today.

I am just so excited to have gotten this router working, fairly painlessly, instead of having to undergo the RMA process that I felt obligated to register and say "Thank You".

Thank You!:)

Glad it worked out :) Please send a PM to CL-Jeremy here on the forums. He's an Asus employee, and he was tracking down those issues to see if they were specific to a faulty batch or something. Send him the serial number, as well as where and when you purchased it.

I just PMed CL-Jeremy with the info, hopefully they can correct this problem.

On a sidenote - I am looking forward to trying out your Asuswrt-Merlin firmware once I am sure the router is working correctly and stable for a bit.

I had the same problem. Luckily, my friend Google brought me here. I followed your instructions and flashed the latest firmware with the recovery program. Worked like a charm. Everything started right up like it was supposed to.

This is a great, though unintentional, demonstration of the recovery feature.

I've set up quite a bit of home networking equipment over the years and I am fairly comfortable with computers. I was about to give up on the router before finding this thread. I wonder how many people just gave up and returned it?

I sent the serial number to Jeremy. It's great to see the manufacturer so responsive and willing to work with the community. It makes me feel more confident that I purchased the right router.

Same issue with AC66R

I am running into the exact same issue mentioned here. The difference is that I am running the AC66R (purchased yesterday from BestBuy). I suspect its the exact same device. Anybody know any better?

I am asking because there is no firmware listed on the ASUS site for this beast and I am tempted to use the latest for the AC66U. Thoughts?

I did not have a chance to reply last night. But, I restored with firmware from the AC66U and all is now well. Running beautifully.

Things are not quite rosy even after the firmware

The router seems not to be able to recover from the cable modem losing connection or just being power cycled. I just spent a frustrating few hours getting it back to life after simply trying to change channels on the router menu. The router seemed to just go back to recovery mode. For some reason, the firmware flash tool didn't work immediately either.

I wish I knew what was going on, I just haven't had this many issues with a router before. Usually I don't even bother with the router when the cable modem reboots. Makes me want to have a backup device. Not sure why I'd ever need to re-flash the same firmware.

You could try to clear the nvram ; press in the wps button 30 sec , power off the router with the wps button still pressed in and wait 30 sec , power on the router still with the wps button pressed in and wait 30 sec. See if this helps.
Have you a cat5e or cat6 cable between the Asus and the modem and when you restored the fw did you use wired to your pc and that cable is also a
cat5e or cat6 ?
I have the Asus and a TP-link connected to my ISP_s router a Zyxel and have the issue that when the ip-adresses to the routers get renewed the TP-Link has no issues regarding internet connection but the Asus has no internet connection. One way is to toggle the Wan to off and then to on in the Asus gui.

I was having the same problem as ben2e too until I performed the above procedures, it really works.
