Update: See post #7, below, for the solution.
After about a year of successfully using the OpenVPN Server on my Asus Merlin RT-AX86U router with both my OpenVPN Windows and Android clients, it suddenly became very unreliable / barely working. To be more specific:
After many experiments I was able to get things working again by changing the protocol from UDP and TCP on both the server and client side.
For completeness, I believe there were 2 changes that happened between the last time I am certain it worked with UDP and when it stopped working:

After about a year of successfully using the OpenVPN Server on my Asus Merlin RT-AX86U router with both my OpenVPN Windows and Android clients, it suddenly became very unreliable / barely working. To be more specific:
- One out of the 4 IP cameras on my network was accessible. I could browse to its login page & watch live video on Tinycam. The other 3 were not accessible.
- I could not successfully browse to my router's login page.
After many experiments I was able to get things working again by changing the protocol from UDP and TCP on both the server and client side.
For completeness, I believe there were 2 changes that happened between the last time I am certain it worked with UDP and when it stopped working:
- I upgraded my router to version 3004.388.4. I did do a full factory reset both before and after the upgrade and reconfigured from scratch.
- Comcast did some upgrades to the network that resulted in my having higher download speeds.
- I understand that UDP prioritizes speed over reliability, but this seems extreme. Does anyone have any idea why UDP no longer works reliably for me?
- Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
- Will using TCP cause any problems if I am trying to access the OpenVPN server from out of the country? I live in California and there are times I need to access it from Europe and India.
