AC5300 Dead after FW upgrade?

I have a friend who has a dead 5300. He told me he was updating the firmware and did a reset to factory. Afterward, it never came back up, no lights. Not even power.

How likely is it a FW update killed the router in this manner? And can an update kill a PSU in the way described?
 
No, firmware update has zero impact on the PSU. Based on these symptoms, I suspect his PSU just died.
