Hello,
Just getting 1GB fiber installed at my house. Looking for a wired 8-port VLAN capable router that does:
1Gbps routing, VLANs, QoS, VPN, etc.
(Tried managed switches, but had problems which could not be resolved. Also don't want to do a Layer 3 switch if possible.)
Any thoughts?

No, 1Gb/s Lan-Lan and Lan-WAN.
What is x86?
your everyday desktop CPU.

There are many ways for 1Gb/s but even so both of those are capable of QoS at gigabit speeds. However if you are ok with auto QoS and hardware NAT there are other solutions. Im not sure all the solutions available, but if 1Gb/s VPN isnt your needs than from mikrotik the minimum is the rb1100AHx2 for both NAT + QoS, from other brands like consumer ones, some marvel based ones are capable or even quad core x64 ARMs may be capable of such too.

What type of VPN are you talking about? Connecting to a VPN provider or a, ipsec site-to-site VPN?

If the VPN is an ipsec site-to-site VPN, the cisco rv130 should do the trick. The only netgear model I know of that can do 1G also has multi-wan (4 to be exact) so that would probably be outside the price range.

the cisco rv130 cant do 1Gb/s NAT + QoS. It just doesnt have the CPU for it and the platform itself doesnt support hardware acceleration with QoS. It also limits your VPN options too.

Many consumer routers already have auto QoS with hardware NAT to give you 1Gb/s of throughput but only some do dual WAN well. Newer ones are coming out with AES acceleration just like mikrotik has in their higher end routerboards which will accelerate any VPN that uses AES encryption or perhaps even wifi AES as well.

Specs are for 800Mbps. Not 1g, but close enough for having ipsec VPN routing capability.

The problem with the consumer implementations of vpn is that if you're trying to connect to other routers that use ipsec for tunnels, you're sol.

800Mb/s QoS? The ERL can only manage 100Mb/s, about 300Mb/s if not using the very taxing fqcodel.

i think you mistake the WAN speeds as they dont mention qos speeds for these sort of routers. Very basic Qos can be done with minimal load but ubiquiti uses fq_codel, not sure if these routers do.

In a funny way these routers are supposed to be hardware accelerated for vpn, yet perform slower when performing NAT + PPP rather than just NAT alone.

Can you provide a little more detail on the use case for 8-ports? Do you really need a FW with 8-ports? Or do you need a VLAN capable FW and a VLAN capable switch?
