So i found out this problem when clients connected to the wifi network provided by the router started getting invalid security certificate warnings, I checked the router's time and found out it wasn't set and was getting the " * Reminder: The system time has not been synchronized with an NTP server. " warning in the GUI.
I logged into the router and did a ping on the ntp server I get "ping: bad address", i tried pinging google from the router, again ping: bad address. So I pinged the gateway, and I get a response there.
The router was set up in "wireless router mode" with nothing plugged into the wan, i thought this is probably the problem and switched it to "Access point mode" and the problem persists. Can't ping out, no NTP synch.
FYI, I ran the router in "Wireless router mode" despite not using it as the primary router because I wanted to keep some of the functions that it provides that get disabled when in "Access point mode".
