The question is not unique to the DS213. Question is: does Synology DSM version x (currently, 5) support what you speak of. You can go to their web site and read. Or ask on the sales email or user forum.

I don't recall seeing that term but virtualization isn't something I want in a NAS.

Can anyone confirm if Synology DS214 supports features like VAAI and trunking?

The DS214+ does not support VAAI or other storage acceleration for virtualization. So I doubt the plain DS214 would.

Synology VAAI support is limited to iSCSI. From experience it makes VM migration, snapshots, etc perform much better than NFS. I have yet to see benchmarks for VAAI vs iSCSI vs NFS. I know NFS iops is superior to plain ole iSCSI, but the gap has been significantly closed in the last few DSM 5.0 updates.
