Setting Up File Station. I must be just missing something.

(embarrased...) I thought I was in the Synology forums... I suspect you mean here: https://community.synology.com I'll post over there. Thx.

Setting Up File Station. I must be just missing something.

I'm a newbie to NAS, but I've been using Windows PCs my whole life. I've built a Linux computer from the mobo up. I'm ignorant to NAS, but not computer illiterate. I know how file systems and folder hierarchies work. But I'm just not getting the file system philosophy with Synology. I just...

Yes, I was roasting myself :) Ok, good to know about migrating RAIDS.

    Of course you can't do RAID10 on 2 drives. That's a silly statement :( So maybe start with 2 drives in RAID1, then when/if I get to 4, I could consider RAID10? Or once I decide RAID1 that's it?

So maybe consider configuring my NAS as RAID10 then, and accept the difference in storage capacity. Can you do RAID10 on a 5 bay? If budget becomes an issue, could I start with 2 drives in RAID10, then add more later seamlessly?

See here for my backstory, if interested. Thank you to all who gave me feedback. After synthesizing everyone's feedback, here's what I'm thinking of purchasing, budget pending: *Synology DS423 or perhaps DS1522 (the decision may be easier, since the 1522 (diskless) is not currently available...

NAS Newbie. Be gentle. Let me think out loud here before I purchase.

Thanks, all. @L&LD, your example of using the disks to move files internally makes sense. As does @eightiescalling with not mixing drive sizes. @sfx2000 I have heard that Synology is more mac-like, and Qnap may be better for native Windows users (like me). Is that accurate? If so, second look...

NAS Newbie. Be gentle. Let me think out loud here before I purchase.

Thanks, all, for your suggestions. I'm learning and picking things up as I go. I didn't even know what RAID 5 was until like a week and a half ago! :) No one seems to be saying I'm totally off base and don't deserve to pick up a drive bay, so I'll take that as a win. (I've had some bad...

NAS Newbie. Be gentle. Let me think out loud here before I purchase.

I'm getting ready to purchase the hardware for setting up NAS at home. My question is about configuring the hard drives and chassis. Personally, I'm more of a software/programming guy than a hardware guy. Hardware doesn't come as naturally to me as software and programming languages. I've been...
