Can you not use the quick connect? I keep my VPN on all the time and access it via quick connect. I've never had an issue on browser's or on any apps(android)

Not sure about the 5Ghz problem but about your WiFi overlap issue. If your have an android device download the "WiFi Analyzer" app from the play store open it up and you can see where the most peoples WiFi channels are and set yours to one least used. Or move it away from the stronger ones in...
I haven't seen anything like that on the ASUS routers.
But you could create a hotspot on a desktop/laptop and just allow access to certain sites. Then switch it off once homework etc is done.
Or you might find flashing DD-WRT or tomato onto the router would give you these settings.

Had a quick look online. Looks like your not the only one with the problem.
I'm assuming you have the Google home app on your phone? And you set it them up that way?
Hard reset a Chromecast. And set it up on a hardwired device (Don't use a wireless device) and see if that solves the problem...
Your wireless devices need to be on the same frequency as the Chromecasts etc.
If they are on 2.4 your other devices need to be on 2.4Ghz as well.
So if your floating between 2.4 and 5GHz or your SSIDs for the 2.4 and 5GHz are the same then your devices will connect to the strongest signal...
Have you rebooted the router. I find that can solve some issues. My NEST thermostat became unreachable all other devices where available/connected to the net. Rebooted the router and it connected straight away.

Have you assigned them Static IP addresses? I had a few issues with my fire TVs that solved it. Especially if they where both on at the same time.

I haven't used my Chromecast in ages. But I ran into this problem a few years ago.
IIRC I think I'd just updated the router but. I just reset it back to factory and that solved the problem. But that was a 1st gen Chromecast.
New ones can get 5Ghz? Are they set up to that or 2.4 I'd just use...

Go onto the PIA forum.
Someone wrote up a good detailed How-to a few years ago.
Don't have the link saved anymore unfortunately.

Yeah. Have to say I haven't had any problems with my 5GHz.
Have you factory reset or rebooted to see if that solves the problem.

I'm sure @RMerlin will release a 382 version but I imagine it'll be a couple of weeks.
But I'll keep my eyes peeled as well.
