It took 48 hours, but the mystery of the mass Asus router outage is solved

I'm a bit confused on whether the modem you were using that you wanted to replace was an MB8600 or one provided by Comcast. But if it was\is an MB8600 have you been happy with the way it performs on Comcast?

    Rt-ax86U disconnects frequently

With this additional information I would be looking at the modem. I had similar but not the same disconnect issues with my AC86U a few months ago. After a lot of debugging I finally had Comcast come out and check their gateway\modem. Turns out it was bad and they replaced it. Problems fixed.

    Rt-ax86U disconnects frequently

Silly question, but have you tried temporarily replacing this router with a substitute one just to see if these same issues occur with the substitute router? If not it might be worth a shot. But I hope these changes do work for you so you can get on with your life. :)

    Rt-ax86U disconnects frequently

So you are running both the Spectrum router AND the AX86U?

OP update to locked 'Move from N66U to AC86U or AX68U or AX86U?'

Moderator - Please remove this post at your discretion. Sorry for not following up on this thread. Life got in the way and I forgot about it. I replaced my N66U with the AC86U I bought in 2018 as most who participated in the thread recommended. Initial setup was a little bumpy but once I got...

Installing switch between AC86U and desktops

I assume you mean no configuration required for when you ran the one cable from one of the wireless router lan ports to a Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 8 that your other devices plug into. Is that correct?

Installing switch between AC86U and desktops

Correct. :) Unfortunately our apartment is rather old (for this country) and has only the one coax line connection where it enters from the outside. A reasonably short coax cable runs from there right to the best practical centrally located location which is where the modem happens to be, and...

Installing switch between AC86U and desktops

Right. Ideally I would like to keep each wired device on its own port on the router rather than sharing everything through one port on the switch. Unfortunately the best location for the desktops is not the best location for the router. Our usage should be fine with this setup but I share your...

Installing switch between AC86U and desktops

With a 6' Cat6 Gigabit Ethernet cable. The new location for the AC86U will be right next to the modem which currently is about 20' away as the crow flies, but 40 - 50' away by Ethernet cable that needs to snake its way around the room along walls, etc., to get there. I'm curious why you ask?

Installing switch between AC86U and desktops

I need to move my AC86U. The current location is perfect for running Ethernet cables to our cluster of three home desktops but it's less than optimal for WiFi coverage, particularly to the far side of our apartment. My plan is to replace the AC86U at its current location with a 5-port switch...

    AC86U - Problem updating firmware from 3.0.0.384 to 3.0.0.4.386_45956

OK. I think I'm alright now. I did a button reset on the 86U and went back through the initial setup again. Tomorrow I'll go through the settings again using L&LD's baseline list. :)

    AC86U - Problem updating firmware from 3.0.0.384 to 3.0.0.4.386_45956

I'm setting up a new AC86U, never used. It came with firmware v3.0.0.4.384. I hooked it up, took it through the initial setup, established SSIDs, passwords, etc., just to make sure everything was connected and working properly. It was. Then I tried to update to the latest firmware using the GUI...

    Move from N66U to AC86U or AX68U or AX86U?

Thanks all for your input. @OzarkEge - Yes, installing the AC86U I already have was my tentative plan. I just needed some other opinions to confirm I am on the right track. And I've had your install notes bookmarked for a while. I'll be reviewing them again with this install. Thanks for...
