Actually I got the AX86U for a backup to my AC86U at a time when a lot of those from the year I bought my AC86U were dying. But mine continued to work flawlessly (hope I didn't just jinx it) so I never switched to the AX86U.
Doing that was something I had planned for this coming holiday season...
I'm a bit confused on whether the modem you were using that you wanted to replace was an MB8600 or one provided by Comcast. But if it was\is an MB8600 have you been happy with the way it performs on Comcast?
With this additional information I would be looking at the modem.
I had similar but not the same disconnect issues with my AC86U a few months ago. After a lot of debugging I finally had Comcast come out and check their gateway\modem. Turns out it was bad and they replaced it. Problems fixed.
Silly question, but have you tried temporarily replacing this router with a substitute one just to see if these same issues occur with the substitute router? If not it might be worth a shot.
