I would take an RT-AX58U with AX-wifi standard to be more future proof for even less. And it got Merlin-support too. AC86U have some strange problems (like reboot wont power on) which arent solved since it has been introduced.

You can try different power-adapter and a factory reset with settings from scratch, dont use saved config file. If it doesnt solve your problem it might be a hareware defect.

Dont use VPN on router and install it on the clients you want it, you even get much faster VPN-connections doing so and reset router to factory.

I think he meant to connect repeater-router to guest-Wifi of master router - yes this is possible to extend guest-Wifi only, but not in Aimesh-mode, extended router needs to be set up in repeater mode.
