Thanks. That's good to know @JT Strickland
From what I can see the instructions for Merlin are wrong in places. I assume they are old and need upgrading.
One question - what do you have in your VPN Client config, and did you follow the instructions for Merlin on the SUrfshark website, or just...
Hi Mr Tvardovsky.
Thanks for the reply.
So after much messing and a few reboots, I finally have the Keys/certificate panel filled and it will finally save. Phew.
Looks like the empty datasets were getting cached to the router.... maybe, a one if the reboots fixed it.
Anyway I have the Surfshark...
An update. So I have completely flattened the router and reconfigured and got it back on the internet - with no VPN.
When I try and import the Surfshark .ovpn file, it does not fill in the Certificate and Static key in the 'Keys and Certificates' panel, despite them being in the .ovpn file.
So I...
Hiya.
On my Merlin f/w 384.19 Asus RT-AC86u I have been running with privateinternetaccess VPN for a while now.
It expires this week, and have decided to try Surfshark.
Followed the instructions on the site for ASUS and Merlin configs, but no joy when installing different .ovpn files.
Have also...
Thanks. Will bear this in mind.
I'd rather not do this unless necessary as I have the Asus router running piggyback from my Talktalk ISP's Huawei modem router which is running in modem-only mode, and has been since I first bought the RT-AC86U a couple of years ago.
It took ages to get the...
Makes no difference. Tried a couple including the Google ones (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). The issue is once you have made the change and saved the page, it buggers up the config. If you the undo your changes and go back to the Automatic option and save the page, which did work before the changes, now it...
Hiya.
Recently been trying to resolve DNS connection issues on my main PC.
Yesterday evening I changed the RT-AC86u's 'Connect to DNS server automatically' on the 'WAN' page to 'No' and I specified a couple of DNS servers. Then saved the page.
This stopped the internet from working. I was...
Hi there,
I have had PrivateInternetAccess configured on my RT-AC86U (Merlin f/w) for a year or so now - no issues - connected to a London PIA server
A while ago iplayer stopped working, which was annoying - but not the end of the world.
What is more annoying a couple of weeks ago BBC and Sky...
OK chaps - I'll bow to the inevitable and factory reset. upgrade etc etc
I was hoping not to do that simply because setting up my VPN client was a real pig, as was configuring the Asus to take a valid connection from my ISP's sh*tty router (running in Bridge mode).
But hey-ho, safety first.
I've...
Hiya,
Running the latest Merlin Firmware.
A while back I setup with DDNS - free Certificate from 'Let's Encrypt' via the router GUI. So I have that Free certificate.
Also via my Android ASUS GUI app I enabled the Remote access from WAN, and was happily accessing router both inside the house and...
Hi,
I an running Merlin 384.8_2, and periodically backup the setup of my RT-AC86U.
There is saving the settings, and saving the JFFS partitions. I do both.
I also note a checkbox "Transfer ASUS DDNS name".
What is the effect of this checkbox, does the checking this box add something to the...
Hi all,
OK, its working. Many thanks to Netbug.
The setup that Netbug posted above has now worked for me with two UK based VPN server setups .
I've now verified this with specific clients on my network, and speed wise its pretty damn quick - so I am happy.
It seems there are subtleties in...
Thanks Netbug.
From what you've posted it looks very similar to my setup. There may be the odd subtle difference which I will clarify when I get back on the router this evening, but I do seem to get a valid connection i.e I get the "Connected (Local : XXXX, Public YYYY)" status, but no internet...
Hi hifiwifi.
Not sure what you mean - Did I add VPN clients to the ASUS setup?? or local clients (phones, tablets etc) to my network??
The answer to both is yes.
I have been using PIA for about 3 years now, via Windows PC OpenVPN client install, and via a painful Raspberry Pi OpenVPN build, so I...
