    Qnap Tvs-471Processor Upgrade

And for anyone else wandering in here, the flash update is easy enough, and you can check your current version from an ssh terminal into the NAS. # dmidecode -s bios-version QW56IR12 To upgrade, download the proper flash and use the command: ./flashrom -c MX25L12805D --programmer internal -w...

    Qnap Tvs-471Processor Upgrade

Wait, what? This is the first I've read of this. Is there a way from the web interface or ssh terminal to see the machine's BIOS version? Or is it only viewable from the local console video during boot? I ask because I have a QM2-2P card in my 671 and had to use the lower (white?) slot. I want...

    Good travel router?

repeating wifi will kill your throughput. wireless to wireless to wireless adds delay. That and if there's not enough bandwidth due to other wifi devices it'll be even worse.

    Good travel router?

I haven't looked at the Cradlepoint units for several years. Back when I go it the Zyxel beat them, hands-down, price-wise. I'd used a Linksys unit that supported PCMCIA card modems but with the advent of 4G those were no longer supported through Verizon. It doesn't look like any of their...

    Good travel router?

Anyone here tried any of the routers from GL-inet? https://www.gl-inet.com/ I don't "need" 5ghz local networking but it would be convenient if in a 2.4ghz-congested area. Wired Ethernet network speed is less a factor in travel situations, thus something with 'only' 10/100 ports isn't a...

    Good travel router?

Neither of which appear support a USB cell modem, nor VPN client functionality. So, no, those aren't going to provide what I want.

    Good travel router?

I've had a Zyxel MWR222 for ages and it's a bit slow. It's nicest feature is integrated support for a USB cell modem. Very handy when there's no wired Ethernet at a hotel. It also has a built-in battery and a very compact form-factor. I don't really ever depend on the battery, so that's not...

    small gigE switches?

Sure, I'm well aware the difference between hubs and switches. I've been wrangling this nonsense since before there was an Ethernet. I've seen plenty of low-end switches that can't keep up with wire speed. Perhaps they're a lot 'less worse' with today's gear, but then we run afoul of...

    small gigE switches?

I've need to install several 5 & 8 port switches and I'm a bit puzzled about how mixes of 100 and 1000 mbps traffic is handled. I've read that a few of the lower end switches on sensing 100mbps traffic will downgrade all switch throughput to that speed. The link to/from the client devices on...

    Build a Mac DAS addon

You might want to consider SAS instead. ATTO makes a Thunderbolt to SAS adapter. You'd use that to connect to a SAS chassis. In which you could install regular SATA drives. Then set them up in arrays as desired. Certainly a lot less hassle than a PCI interface. Most CPU have more than...

    Parts suggestions?

If you've got decent 1gbe network cards and switches there's not much pointin adding a second interface. 2 interfaces does not automatically double performance. Software has to understand about using multiple connections and a simple streamer isn't. Same with file sharing. 10gbe interfaces...

5 HDDs - help and advice please

Best use? Give all but #1 away. RAID requires drives of matching sizes, none of yours match. Then there's drive speed, the rest of the drives are going to be considerably slower. And don't forget about power consumption, older drives tend to require more power. Your best bang for the...
