Do you power off your NAS when not in use?

From my understanding, when a NAS or SAN powers down into a low power state by idling the hard drives, the platters come to a complete stop. In my mind, this is extremely detrimental to the bearings of the spindles as the constantly cycling of spinning of the platters has to cause the most...

24 port Gigabit Smart Switch: Netgear ProSafe GS724T vs HP ProCurve 1800-24G J9028B

As I mentioned to you before in another thread I have a Netgear GS748TP. I can say the switch is pretty nice in terms of the GUI and feature set. The only issue I have with the switch is a problem acknowledged by Netgear with this model. It appears that a batch of 748s left the factory with...

Throughput Impact of Multiple Switches vs. 1 Switch

There is a potential throughput limitation when you traverse traffic externally from the switch's backplane. You're limited to the speed of the link between switches. If your network traffic profile is such that inter switch traffic will consume or exceed the throughput of the physical...

Adaptec 2940 Ultra SCSI Adapter: Largest HDD supported? Speed, BW, Current Cost?

The 2940 UW is only capable of data transfers of 40 MB/s. All SCSI devices are designed to be backwards compatible. You just have to get the appropriate mating cable to go between the controller and the drive. Correction: Forgot you said 2940 Ultra which is only capable of data throughput...

Advise: Choosing the Switches: Gigabit as well as Non-Gigabit?

LOL. Well, the Netgear GS748TP is a pretty expensive switch. But it's far from the most expensive device in my home network. I have a bunch of other Cisco gear that I've used as part of my home "production" network and part being used as a lab/test environment. I'm a network engineer by...

Advise: Choosing the Switches: Gigabit as well as Non-Gigabit?

You can get a Dell PowerConnect 2724 for $269. Or you can get a Netgear GS724T for $294 at NewEgg. I've worked with both the Dell and the Netgear Smart/Web switches extensively. The Dell I have is a 2708 which has been running reliably for about 4 or so years now. The only issue I've had...

Good backup DNS servers and backup gateways?

Or you can run your own DNS server. I built one using Windows Server 2003. It's been rock solid stable for the 2-3 years since I built it. The backup gateway is a bit confusing to me. It sounds like it's a setting if your router can't talk out your normal ISP gateway and the backup gateway...

Do you power off your NAS when not in use?

No thanks. I'd keep any NAS or SAN unit running 24/7. I've seen too many arrays drop drives when they were powered back up. If you ask storage professionals, they'll tell you the biggest stress they have is when they have to power up an array.

NAS Performance, is a PC Better?

iSCSI has draw backs. One of which is CPU overhead. And it goes without saying that you need to have a network infrastructure which can handle the additional demands of iSCSI. It's been a while since I had to do anything storage related. But when I took a class at Dell on the EMC Clariion...

    VPN Technology Poll

Mine is a bit of a mixed bag. I currently have a Netgear FVS338 I use as my edge router that provides one IPSEC (AES 256) VPN connection into my network. I also have a Cisco ASA5505 which just functions as a VPN concentrator serving up Cisco's WebVPN. Internally, I have another Cisco ASA5505...

Gigabit Switch, or Gigabit router and switch?

Keep in mind that keeping a single link between the upstairs and the downstairs is going to contrain the LAN performance between the floors even if both ends are connected to GigE switches. It really depends on the type of network activity we are talking about. If both the laptop and the...

    Surge suppression and powerline networking

If you're concerned about power surges which typically are external to the home entering into the main service panel, a whole house surge suppressor works by shunting the power spike to ground at the panel. Just think of it as a surge strip which you plug your house power in to. ETA: The...

    Surge suppression and powerline networking

I always recommend everyone regardless of whether they have lots of sensative electronics to just a simple clock radio to install a whole house surge suppressor. I have one installed at my main service panel that I did myself. Installation is pretty simple depending on the type of setup you...
