I'm not sure if anyone here is still interested in or uses ASUS' Smart Connect feature on their newer dual and tri band routers. If so, I've found all of the hidden settings for this feature (settings not accessible in the GUI) and, for the most part, have figured out how to 100% customize it...

ROUTER1------------ -IS A ROUTER/MODEM combo. and connects to internet through Isp phone line.
Does not support dd-wrt firmware, so the need for second router
ROUTER2..............just router only, connects to the wan port of Router1 to get to internet, Flashed...
To clarify - I'm talking about the max number of client connections, not TCP/UDP connections. In other words, the number of devices that can be wirelessly connected concurrently.
I'm running Merlin 380.63_2.
Is this limit in hardware or firmware?
