2.4 vs 5 GHz

I have noticed lately that my 2.4 GHz radio on my good old ( faithful ) Rt AC 88 u ain't what it used to be. So my questions are,if I have already asked some of them please excuse my crappy memory, is three years a long time for an AC 88 u ? Is the degradation of the 2.4 GHz radio normal?
The 5 GHz radio is AOK so I don't believe the router needs replacing yet, but before spending say $400+ au on an Ax 88 u I naturally defeer to the gurus on SNB
I know it's not going to last forever but as it's main job is to a stream video I don't really want to be left high and dry without my , Hulu,us Netflix, Amazon prime,( just to name a few) . Yes I am a junkie hooked on crappy movies but now that Melbourne VIC Australia has gone into lockdown no 4 what the hell else is there to do?????????????

I wouldn't buy an AX anything unless you really need it, WiFi 6E is on the horizon so anything you buy needs to be future proof.

I have an old Billion BiPac router that has been running for at least 8 years without any issue so the radio components can work for many years.

First thing to do is make sure your RT-AC88U is clean and not overheating. Maybe a full reset and/or reflash of the firmware could help.

Are there any new neighbours using the same 2.4Ghz channels as you and interfering with the connection?

The only Wifi 6e routers that will be available are very expensive tri-band models. People shouldn't hold on replacing a router just because of this, as the vast majority of users will not buy a 400$ tri-band router.

I have just changed from auto to channel 10 ( the most quiet locally) after doing a quick site survey so I am going to see how it goes for the next few days or so. I hear you regarding WiFi 6 and ax router's , so yeah I have been putting off buying an Rx router.
I don't really rely on the 2.4 band much but I have just bought my wife a new phone,a Nokia g 10 ,and was surprised to find it only has 2.4 radio support. We are on a 100 GB plan

ok thanks guys you have given me food for thought. I might try an m&m reset. Last time I did one , I can't remember what the problem was then but I do remember it fixed it and see if I can put off shopping for a while

M&M reset is a waste of time. Just do a Hard Factory Reset: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1039074/
and configure manually.
As for the 2.4 GHz band channel 1, 6, or 11 are better choices. Also use 20 MHz bandwidth.

@bbunge, what you describe 'instead' of an M&M config, is an M&M config. (Less verbal, but the same). :D
