4 port switch POE question....

Hi I have a strange question if I get one of these here:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005XUNWZ2/?tag=snbforums-20

Can I use my broadband modem to one of its network ports and then use the other 3 spare ports to give broadband internet to other future devices BUT on the same POE 4 port plug ?

I want to avoid a switch or using my modems ports since they are full plus I hate the extra cabling and extra power plug required etc, I will of course in future add more POE adaptors around the house but just not sure the above is possible ?

Broadband modem needs to connect to WAN port of router. Being layer 2, it may be that the router can connect to one of the IP on power line and the modem to another. Not positive, but seems like it should work. But by convention, the modem connects directly to the router's WAN port and stays off of the LAN subnet.

Hi Steve, thanks for the answer same steve from pfsense forums by chance?;)

Yes its a bit of an odd question guess in theory it should still work. If push comes to shove I will get a usb powered switch. and then pass it through the POE plug.

Merry xmas :)

Let me get this straight, you want to use the powerline adaptor to connect the modem to the router's WAN port AND also as a switch for LAN?

BTW, it's not POE. It's powerline adaptor. POE is a whole different thing altogether - it's used to provide power over an ethernet cable run to power the end device.

I highly doubt it will work properly since there's always the off chance that any other device on the LAN might hijack the DHCP address issued by the modem.

Powerline adaptors aren't exactly fast either (despite the advertised speeds) and depending on your power line conditions, can actually severely impact your throughput - I've encountered adapters that fall down to as low as 5mbps linkrates.

Your best bet is to get a small 5 port gigabit switch and use it as a dedicated switch for LAN. If you're using pfSense, you might be able to actually chuck this switch in the chassis to save space (subjected to space constraints). Just open up an expansion bracket and run the ethernet cables through.
