Sometimes, like once a day, I get these messages (kernel trap, etc etc) and the 5G network stays visible but it does not accept any more clients.

Here's the configuration, as I could have poked something I shouldn't have.

As you can see, the channel has changed to 0, and if I click the dropdown there are no options other than Auto. Actual channel is usually 64.

Current Control Channel 0 - usually bad news. Same thing in Asus stock and Merlin - RMA time.
 
Good insight. I've been looking at other threads and it seems most of the affected users had that problem right after booting, and not after a while of using the router.

Truth is I've been playing a lot lately with the 5G settings, changing channels constantly, etc. because I wanted to see which one would give me the best latency and throughput results. I will stop changing the configuration to see if it doesn't happen again, which could indicate a software problem. Otherwise I'll have to RMA the router which, in the current situation, will be a headache.

Thank you. Channel was manually set, but I am going to set width to 80 MHz. (It was 20/40/80)
 
Unfortunately it keeps happening once a day. Channel is 0 but the MAC address is visible in the webui (other users mentioned they couldn't see it anymore). Additionally, one of the crashes didn't produce a trap message in the syslog.

I've rolled back to 384.15. It was working fine there and the 384.16 changelog mentions "UPDATED: Merged SDK + binary blobs 384_81352 for RT-AC86U" which could be related.

I'd gladly return it but once again it is not possible currently. I'll post here if anything changes.
 
It kept happening again and again, I just returned it and got an 88U instead. We'll see how it goes.
 
Just a few months later, the 88U is doing the exact same thing. Great hardware quality it seems.
