5G trouble with AC66U

LarsErikOsterud

New Around Here
I replaced my N66U with an AC66U.
But 5G is very instable. One second its very strong. Next all gone.
Tried different channels and bandwith.
Network analyzer app shows it come and go even if I standing next to the AC66U.
If my phone sees the 5G and I connect, next minute it's "out of range".
Anything I could try? Or is there something wrong with the 5G transmitter?

Except for the first generation 'AC' parts the 'AC66U has, those routers are essentially the same, but my experience with my customers has shown the RT-AC66U to be a more fragile router (many have died and have been replaced by better).

Did you do a full reset to factory defaults followed by a minimal and manual configuration (did not use a backup config file)?

Did you use new ssid's without special characters (and not 'hidden')? Are the passwords similarly all Alpha numeric too?

What firmware version are you using? Have you updated to the latest yet? Did you try RMerlin's firmware (or one of the forks thereof)?

If all the above have been followed through on and the problem persists, it is probably a hardware fault. I would still not recommend replacing the router with the same model though (most of my customers RT-AC66U's lasted just over a year before they gave out).

5 year warranty in Norway so I put tight. Why is it more fragile than the N66U?
The 2.4 GHz part is the same right? Is it the 5 GHz part that breaks down?
Got 5G to work with my phone by chossing a lower channel btw (a Samsung S5).
Otherwise it seems OK (the radios show a little higher temp than on the N66U).

No idea why it is more fragile. But I've never seen an RT-N66U 'die', but I've seen a dozen or more RT-AC66U's which just stopped working (sooner or later). I've stopped recommending them for years now.
