5GHz band dropping?

gilroy222

New Around Here
I decided to join after being brought here from google quite often.

I'm hoping someone can help. My 5GHz keeps dropping on my RT-N53.

Everything else works fine.

More information would help us help you. :)

What firmware are you using on the RT-N53? What customizations have you enabled in the router? What features other than wireless/wired routing are you using (eg. USB disks, etc.)?

Which device(s) are dropping the connection? What O/S are they running (and is the O/S up to date)?

Have you updated the driver on each device?

What steps have you taken to try to fix this issue?

Have you tried a reset to defaults of the router and also use a new ssid (to force a re-association with each of your devices)?

I am running the latest firmware from Asus' site. I have spoken with a few reps to try various settings. The longest I was able to hold a constant connection was 1 week and then it went away. The router was always putting the band on channel 151 or something that high and was on "N" only mode. Tonight I did a big change by placing it on channel 36 and set it to "N" only mode as well as place it on 20/40 mode.

I am using a laptop, macbook, android, blackberry and ps3 on the router. The laptop can only use the 2ghz band but all other devices can do 5ghz and all are up to date. All of them are unable to see the 5GHz band whenever it drops.

Asus support wants to issue an RMA but I don't believe that will solve anything as many people have complained about this issue.

I wish I read about this before I purchased the router.

So many words, so little info you provide...

I would recommend the Auto setting and not 'N' only, for starters. Still need more info.

I apologize. I to provide info as it is asked so people will actually read my questions lol.

Anyway, When I first bought it I left all settings on auto. When I realised how far behind my firmware was I upgraded about a day later. The problems started occuring and I have done hard resets via the button. Power Cycles. and rebooting via the button in the UI. All of these things bring back the 5GHz band but I was looking for a more permanent solution instead of always having to reboot. I then experimented by changing SSID's and passwords, changing channel and mode settings and turning off schedulers and things of that nature. I also once had the SSID hidden, but have turned that option off and it had no effect.

To the advice of a support rep I Re-flashed the firmware, doing hard resets before and after, and even flashing back to the old firmware and then re-updating the firmware. None of this worked.

One other thing to add is when I went to upgrade the firmware for the very first time, I used the UI's firmware checker but it detected I had the latest firmware. Comparing versions with the Asus site I could see that was wrong, so I had to download the file and upload manually.

Hopefully I answered your questions better lol. In a nutshell, I have actually experimented with most of the settings on the 5GHz band page in the UI with little or no success.
