a free dynamic dns advice ?

Hi,

I'm on WRT610N router and until now used its dyndns function with a free account on dyndns.org.
Problem is that dyndns no longer offer free services and my router only supports TZO (not free) and dyndns.
I searched the web and found no-ip that seems ok with free dyndns service.

What do you think about no-ip ?

I suppose using my WRT610N with no-ip requires a firmware upgrade to support it but such firmware doesn't exist. Is there any other way to use no-ip on my router ?

Would you please explain me why the dyndns provider is hard programmed in the firmware because if one wants to change its dyndns provider, it is impossible without a new firmware. Does each dyndns provider require a specific protocol ? Why is there not a standard open dyndns protocol working with any provider thus avoiding a firmware upgrade (provided it exists) to support a new provider ?

thanks

Have you tried to put in your no-ip dns entry with the dyndns service? I don't use the router you have but on my router I have dyndns service selected but my no-ip dns name filled in and it works fine.

Not yet, I have to create an account on no-ip.com first.

You mean you don't put the provider name i.e. "no-ip" in your router and rather you just put your attributed domain name ?
If yes, that would mean you're not dependent on a particular provider. This is exactly what I wonder is not the case in mine where I must select between TZO and Dyndns providers. Nowhere to put my given domain name.

My router ask for the service and then the hostname. I put dyndns as my service, and my personal no-ip ddns address in the hostname.
I use a Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite. It is a pro level router and a great router, but not good if you are new to networking and routers. For example, I had to use the CLI to set up both my DDNS and my VPN server.
