VPN's not wholly owned by the person operating/using them are not to be trusted. And not just for the reasons the article states either.

L&LD: Absolutely; throw away all the so-called reviews, research every aspect of the provider, verify and only then place your money, faith and trust, not the reverse. The reality you can only do so much to secure your data and communications. Any of the 14-eyes guys that want your data -will- get it, by hook or crook. In 8 years we've been fortunate to have good relations with two VPN companies, the research took months but was worth it. Good luck to us all
