[AC R68U] Wireless Connection Issues

John M

New Around Here
I started having wireless connectivity issues recently. It seems that for whatever reason why my cell phone is connected and my son's Xbox is connected we are constantly dropping in and out. As soon as one of us disconnects the other one stays on with no issues but as soon as we connect again issues start occuring.

I don't know what is wrong! Here is some more information:

I have about 13 to 16 wireless clients in our house at any given time (two Xboxes, a Wii U, 4 phones, 4 tablets, a printer, a picture frame, two Google homes, and a Cromecast). Currently I am running only G and AC but I only have one client on the AC.

I thought it might had been an issue with my router so I preformed a factor reset, updated the firmware, and setup the router again. Issues still occur.

Have I reached a point of too many clients... Should I turn off the AC? Any suggestions?

Disable Airtime Fairness in both 2.4 and 5 GHZ.

Guys... I am so stupid... I just realized what the issue was... Long story short: the MAC address was the same on my phone and Xbox... So the reason why we were dropping so much was because of the MAC conflict and the forwarding of the packets.

Begs the question of how two devices can have the same MAC address, but I guess that's the "long story".:D

The super quick answer is spoofing.

The bottom line is my Xbox was spoofing my phone's MAC because I wanted to play Xbox while in a hotel and it's a quick and easy way to connect to a hotel's network.

Sad thing is I forgot about it. I have not used that Xbox One in a few years.

Same thing happened to my son, we both travel for a living. Glad you got it sorted out!

I made sure to purchase him a travel router for his Bday last year. (I already own one). If you do buy one, setup the travel router with the same SSID and password as your home for easy access from all devices when out of town. Make sure and get one that supports WISP mode. I think I paid $30-40 dollars for mine with shipping. Much easier than dealing with WiFi issues at the hotel.

* Though with some travel routers you may get restricted NAT type on the Xbox. So do some research before buying. My son has never had a real issue as most of the hotels limit the NAT type even directly connected.

*Several brands on Amazon. Use the search button near the top of the forums (for Amazon, and the forums will get a small thank you)

* If you don't want to purchase anything, call the network Helpdesk, on the hotel room card and give them the MAC address of the Xbox, they can set it up so you don't need to accept the captive portal terms. He does this when he forgets the travel router.
