AC66U Port Triggering & QoS

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forums and not much of a networking guru so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I'm currently using an ASUS AC66U 3.0.0.4.374_130. My first question is should I install a custom firmware i.e. Merlin? Basically I have a AT&T 2wire 3801 and i've disabled wireless and I'm using my AC66u to handle all my traffic (at least I think I am). To achieve this I plugged the ac66u into one of the 2wire ports and set it to DMZplus mode, then just turned off the wireless broadcast on the 2wire, everything seems to be working just fine, I just want to make sure i'm not missing anything and crippling potential network performance (can someone confirm this for me?).

Ive got a linksys wumc710 on its way that I plan to connect to my PS3, PS4, Wii, SmartTV in order to achieve 5ghz AC networking on these devices. I tried to open the ports on the ac66u for my playstation but i've checked using an online tool and it says the ports aren't open? Not sure what I'm doing wrong, the 2wire has my ac66u in its dmzplus mode so the ports shouldnt be blocked on the 2wire side.

lastly i'd like to configure my network to give my PS4 priority over everything else on the network and/or limit the bandwidth for all the other devices connected. I've read that QoS is/was buggy and would cause lag spikes, has this been fixed in the latest firmware or in the Merlin build? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

If you have the option disable the DHCP server function on your first router.

If you can't do that then run a double NAT setup with the ASUS having a static WAN IP in the 2 Wire modem/router's DHCP range and then set the ASUS to assign IPs in a different subnet.

Hmm thanks for the reply I have no idea if I can or cannot disable DHCP server on the 2wire to be honest I'm not even sure I know what that means but I'll log into it and check it out right now and report back. Are you familiar with the 2wire 3801?

Okay so under DHCP I see the following options:

If you change the IP address range, you must renew the DHCP lease for all devices on the network.

192.168.1.0 / 255.255.255.0 (default)
172.16.0.0 / 255.255.0.0
Configure manually
Router Address
Subnet Mask
First DHCP Address
Last DHCP Address
DHCP Lease Time hours (24 hours default)
Select Default Address Allocation Pool for the DHCP Server

Warning: This selection modifies the default LAN network used by the DHCP server for address assignments to new devices. The default setting is Private Network. Change it only to Public Network when you want every new device getting a public address assigned. The recommendation is Private Network. You can change the setting for each individual on the 'IP Address Allocation' page.
