AC68U Setup Questions

Delecron

New Around Here
I have a two story apartment that has been getting horrible WIFI performance as of late, much of which I believe was due to my neighbors all getting wifi suddenly.

In my living room I have my RT-N66R as my router. I put down some cash and got a RT-AC68U and a PCE-AC68 for my desktop (I hate running wireless on my PC but I don't have a choice.

My previous setup was having 2 networks on both the 2.4 and 5g, called D1 and D2 respectively. I got a Cat6 through the floor and now the AC router is setup upstairs as an access point. For all my networking skills I've never done this before.

Currently I'm getting a solid 866.5 Mbps on the PC and it has Turbo-QAM enabled.

I have a few Chromecasts I'm leaving on 2.4g because I hear they having issues with 5ghz and my Vizio tv only supports 2.4g.

The way I setup the access point was to obviously put it in Access Point mode and duplicated the wireless settings. Here are my questions:

1. How can I tell if the AC router is using Turbo-QAM? Is this something that happens by default when paired with the Asus card or do I have to turn anything on in the router?

2. I have an HTC One which I just found out supports AC and Turbo-QAM. Its only getting 234mbps, which is great but should this be better?

3. I'm not sure how roaming is supposed to work. Will my devices automatically switch to the upstairs access point when its signal is stronger?

4. My Vizio upstairs has a setting to specify the access point I want it to connect to. I think this is great considering I don't want it to bounce to the downstairs router. Where in the configuration on the router do I specify a unique name?

5. With Turbo-QAM enabled, all interference considerations aside, what is the theortical maximum I could get from AC-1900?

Thank you all in advance, I'm an old-school networking guy but some of this new wireless stuff as gotten away from me.

heya, mostly posting to draw some specifics from you that may help those knowledgable about AC may help you better, so here goes

regarding question 1, if you open up your list of adapters, 'properties' > 'configure', you may find some options regarding turboqam. if i had to guess, it would be set to 'auto' by default and could be configured on/off.

2.) how far away is the device from the AP?

3.) it wont roll over to the better signal until it's entirely lost it's current connection, so no. that feature probably will show up in newer AC routers, if i had to guess. it appears Ubiquiti is the company to go to if you want that feature now. If i were in the market for an AP, right now, they'd likely be who i go with. I want Asus to get on the ball, though. I like their products a lot.

4.) just making sure your APs have different SSIDs should be enough, has this been a problem?

5.) looks like 80mhz width is capable of up to 1300mbps. when routers can do 160mhz wide, they could hit 2340mbps, according to an 'AC modulation schemes' chart found. it also says that max on 2.4ghz is 600mbps, limited by a 40mhz channel width, which isn't particularly recommended on 2.4ghz as you'll be causing and receiving interference from a larger range of nearby devices.

cheers

TurboQAM is only for the 2.4 GHz band, allowing up to 600 Mbps with a compatible interface. Since you are using 802.11ac on the 5 GHz band then TurboQAM does not apply.
