AC87U

Hi All,

I just got the RT-AC87u, so far trying to understand bits and pieces. My main concerns are the following:
  • Max coverage for 2.4G and 5G, but 2.4G is priority.
  • USB 3.0 storage on network with multiple usernames (I cannot open from windows PC unless i enable guest login)
  • Stability.
Can you plz advise which FW can help me address the above points? and how to configure the router in the most optimum way for the above points?

56_2 by my opinion is better then 9383 about the signal and throughput.. But has huge battery drain on Android devices which are connected to 5ghz. Also I have problem with hdd spin off, for this reason I bought 128 gb usb flash.

I think my hdd spin is ok, its a Seagate backup plus, where i used the seagate dashboard application on PC to adjust the spin down timer, and it is still the same when i connected the hdd to the router, same spin down timer.

For 5GHz, is the battery drain on on android devices?

I have huge battery drain on 5Ghz on all my android devices. It takes about 10% per hour but this is coming from quantenna chip not from merlin firmware.. 9383 official says that battery drain is better but it's better just a little.

The battery drain issue effects many mobile devices using the 5 GHz with the current quantenna firmware. I have always recomended that if you are using a mobile device and it doesn't leverge AC multiple streams you are better off using 2.4 GHz since it does have better signal penetration. Other than that the AC87U performs well with Merlin's firmware.

How do you access the hdd from windows? I can only access from windows if I tick the guest login in the 87U gui, else i always get cannot connect. I want to be able to use username and password.

I've access files with enabled Samba server and enter to Explorer the address of the router \\192.168.1.1 never ask for user name and password.. My guest login is disabled..

Doesn't work with me, both windows 7 and windows 10.
Did you create any username/passwords in the AC87U GUI? The only one shown is admin.
I tried in linux based systems, it asks me for username and password and when i enter them it works, the problem with windows it just doesn't even ask about username/password.
