AC88U -- HD won't mount

I'm noticing that on the RT-AC88U, my external hard drive won't mount. I've tried both models that are powered from the USB 3 port, and those that are separately powered. I've also reset the router, and reloaded the latest firmware. No joy.

What is strange is that the DLNA server finds the music on the drive fine, but nothing else can see the drive in windows 10, because the router will not mount it.

Any suggestions, or is this likely a firmware bug?

If the DLNA server serves its content, then the disk is properly mounted. Your issue is with the Samba disk sharing.

Thanks. I found the solution was to reset the router to clear the unmounted message, and then turn samba off and on again. Than it was findable.

Hmmm. It seems I spoke too soon. Turning samba on and off only fixed things for a while, now it has disappeared from view again. Any ideas how to fix the Samba disk sharing issue, or do I just need to wait for firmware update?

I'm not seeing anything weird in the system log. I have been reading, however, that windows 10's latest rev has some issues with network discovery and Samba. Hopefully being worked on. Something about a march release for a fix. Is anyone else with windows 10 having issues seeing Samba shares?

No problem here with both my laptop and my desktop. My firmware does use a newer version of Samba however than Asus (3.6.25 vs 3.0.25b).

Well, this is strange. I've loaded your firmware, which I like a lot, but I'm still only seeing the DLNA server, not the disk, at least consistently. I was able to make it appear a while back on one pc, and pinned it for rapid access, and I can access the disk when I clicked on it, but it does not come up in explorer. Very strange.

Wait! I just did a search on Asus in the search bar under network, and several missing items appeared, including the asus shared disk. I'm still thinking something buggy about windows 10 is going on...but I do like your firmware!

Try forcing the router to be the Master Browser, and make sure everyone is set to the same workgroup. Your issue sounds like whoever won the election to be the browser master is firewalled.

Actually, everything seems to be working well now. All PC's are showing the shared drives, as they should.

It is possible that webroot, which I have on all the pc clients, may have been causing issues that were fixed when I searched for asus in the network search box. Unclear, but I'm happy it is working now.

I saw your master browser options. What effect would that have? I was uncleaer on the concept.

Short version: the master browser is the computer on the LAN responsible for maintaining the list of computers part of a workgroup. If whichever computer that wins the election is firewalled, it will make your other computers's Network list be unable to provide with a full list of local computers. The router can be forced to always win that election, to ensure that does not happen.
