Hi,

I currently have 3x RT-AX92U's in a Mesh Setup (Yes I know, in my defence I was young and foolish). I have reached my limit on available Ethernet ports (Doorbell/Cameras/Smart Lights) on the main unit so was looking to maybe add an RT-AX88U Pro into the mix as the main unit and just adding an extra node to the mesh. I am currently running stock firmware but would be interested in installing Asuswrt-Merlin (on the 88U) or Gnuton fork (on the 92U) at a later date.

Would be interested in the opinion of people who have way more knowledge than myself on this subject.

I'm with BlueOrbit, if you need more LAN ports; why not a network switch rather than a expensive new/used router?

If it's working properly - don't disturb. It's a quirky End-of-Life model, continue using stock Asuswrt. Disable all services open to WAN and you're good for some time. Get a $20 switch for more LAN ports. Upgrade the entire system when the current one doesn't do what you expect it to do. No rush.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be honest I never even considered getting a switch.

My reasoning for getting an RT-AX88U was not just for more LAN ports, I am actually in need of another node as my son keeps "Borrowing" one of the existing 92U's as he believes it gives him less gaming lag hardwiring into it rather than using the WiFi so buying an 88U would solve this problem and give me a more robust base unit.

I will still replace the 92U's over time as like you say they are quirky and will stop being supported at some point.

The cost is not an issue, I spend large amounts of time working offshore and buying Tech is my therepy.

I would ultimately like to install a Hard Wired Backhaul, with the same number of nodes I have, so I'm looking at what the best final setup would look like so I can achieve it step by step.

The reason I'm sticking with Asus is just familiarity with the software.
