Any user experiences with the low end (1bay, 2bay) Synology NASes?

What are you looking for, Steve? I've been using a DS109+ for years as an rsync'd secondary backup for a QNAP TS-109 Pro. No problems, no complaints.

just looking for users' comments on the 1 or 2 bay NASes and the firmware ease of use. Hoping for a concensus. Wish they sold Synology or QNAP at Fry's instead of the poop NASes I see there. Just easy to return one I didn't like.

I'm unhappy with Fry's here in Arizona. I did an in store pickup and it turned out to be an open box item. I also needed a PSU converter cable and was told no luck when I called, only to find the plug the next day there (for something else)

I wrote Fry's customer service about the open box, and heard nothing from them ( given the cash I spend in a year on components, you'll think they'd be willing to send a hooker over to the house... )

I know their history (old time 24 hour component superstore in Palo Alto), and was very happy to discover there was a story here when I first arrived in AZ. Only to be disappointed once I started frequenting the place.

Though they don't rob you blind like Best Buy ($15 for a sata cable), they don't really seem to care about their customers either. I can also save taxes by buying from new egg, and I know without a doubt that if it ain't good, new egg will make it so.

yeah, Fry's is a commodity store. I heard a rumor way back that the Fry's family began selling groceries.

But they have a liberal return policy.
And these days, at the two here in Sandy Eggo, they have price-matched some big ticket items I've bought like PCs, versus even WalMart and Newegg.
Just this weekend, after our power outage debacle, I went to get a better UPS, to run my den computer and my garage computer (always on).
The 1500VA I wanted was on sale and had rebate, yielding $129 price. But the sale and rebate expired one day prior - reverting to $179 (supposedly). But after whining to two sales guys, they got a manager to sell at the discount anyway. They probably know their cost and what margins the competitive price matches push them to.

I have had a couple of time consuming in-store arguments with them, but they were resolved to my benefit. Like the neat-o Acer PC for $399 in the ad. Oh, we seem to be out- can't find any. Computer says we have 20, but we can't find them. Well, after pressing 3 different sales guys, they came up with one.

I also buy a lot from Newegg which is usually one-day's delivery since they are only 90 miles away. Really like that.

But - to the question: consensus among owners of 1 or 2 bay Synology NASes....

Well... one hopes that a vendor's forum doesn't edit the users' postings that might allude to dissatisfaction!
