ASUS 5300

New Around Here
Hello All, I'm a newbie having trouble setting up a new Asus 5300 Wireless Modem.

1. The 5300 User Manual says to use the supplied internet cable to connect directly to the cable modem. Of course the supplied cable is much too short, and a regular internet cable doesn't seem to work. What kind of a cable is it, a cross-over, a straight-through, other?

2. I'm using several Apple Home Kit things, like an Ecobee3, AppleTV, etc., and I'd like to add the 5300 to my existing Apple Network with Apple Extreme, Time Machine, etc., and not have to reset all of the attached devices. What's the best and easiest way to pull this off?

Thanks very much and best regards, Carbonunit1

There is nothing special about the supplied Ethernet cable you can use any standard cat 5e or cat 6 cable at any length.

explain further on where the 5300 is located to in relation to the cable modem and in what method you are trying to run it?

is the cable modem a pure modem or a router as well ? whats the make and modem of the cable modem ?

how do you envisage using the 5300 ? is it going to be your main router or just an access point and how and what is the extreme going to do in this new setup ?as its just more wifi or are you replacing the extreme with the 5300

Thanks for your reply.

It's a Comcast Business Class NETGEAR CG3000DCR Advanced Cable Modem Gateway.

how do you envisage using the 5300 ?
I'd like to expand my current wireless range and increase wireless speed. Mostly business applications - large proposals and graphic files. I frequently project these for client collaborative conversations with Airplay and a 60" flat screen monitor.

is it going to be your main router or just an access point
Probably just an access point, but not really certain at this point. I'd like to get it up and running, then make a decision.

and how and what is the extreme going to do in this new setup
Would like to use my existing Apple Network, including the Apple Extreme for Home Kit devices and time machine. I also run a fairly large Promise Thunderbolt file server using OSXs, but hope to significantly expand the speed and range of my current Apple Extreme Tower network using the 5300.

as its just more wifi or are you replacing the extreme with the 5300

Asus isn't very Apple friendly - I would recommend returning it for refund, and find something else from another vendor...

If you're doing HomeKit, etc, along with TimeMachine/TimeCapsule, and AirPlay/Airprint - go to the iStore and buy an Airport Express and extend it from your Airport Extreme - alt approach would be go on-line to the Apple Refurb store and see what they're offering on the Airport Exteme's there - last time I checked, they were $129USD for a very good AC1900 class access point..
