Asus AC68 or Netgear R7000

I currently have a WRT54GL that is 3 years old and works perfectly, no reboots no dropped wifi, good enough signal in our small house. We use wireless on 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. Wired on 2 laptops, Apple TV, directv, and smart blueray player. Internet is TWC and was 20 down 2 up which we get using wireless and hard wired on all devices. We just have not had any problems for the past 3 years. The router is running stock firmware from 2009. We use an 8 port gigabit unmanaged switch for the wired devices.

I need to replace this router as our internet speed just increased to 100 down 10 up and it just seems the time to do it. I want stability, I prefer to just use the defaults for everything, and we are not interested in any router features other then the basics.

My question, Right now, using stock firmware, is the Asus ac68 or the netgear r7000 the best choice as the most stable router?

I think both of them are getting a bit long in the tooth. I have a wrt1900ac that has been working fine for me for a few months now. I'd just go though this site and read some of the reviews.

Thanks, I have done that and when I started I had an apple your router, and the two I mentioned, for various reasons I have got it down to the ac68 and R7000. Many of the reviews and ratings are based on routers using different firmware then is now available, so I thought I would query here.

Well, the firmware now is a lot more stable than when these units first came out. The R7000 was damn near unusable for a while.

The R7000 is stable and performing well with the stock Netgear firmware now.

For the first few months of ownership of the R7000 I took refuge in the stability of dd-wrt firmware. Now dd-wrt is just another choice of firmware available for the R7000, offering lots of features not in the stock firmware. Not a bad thing to have a choice *smile*.

Anyways, my opinion is that the R7000 is a good choice, mature and it performs really well. It gives me all the wired and wireless bandwidth that I need. I'll use it as long as I can since the other, newer choices on the horizon are either not ready, or I'm not ready for them *smile*.
